Dealing with algae, cyanobacteria, and red slime in a saltwater or reef tank can be frustrating. There are a few steps to take in dealing or preventing problem algae.
1. A good protein skimmer can remove all Dissolved Organic Compounds, food for algae and good circulation to avoid stagnant areas in your tank.
2. Using tap water as make-up or top-off can add unwanted nitrates and phosphates, make sure you use R/O filtered water.
3. A cleaning crew to help eat your unwanted algae, hermit crabs, snails, urchins or serpent stars to eat algae or decaying mater.
4. Do not overstock your tank, remember fish can produce wastes that can buildup and cause major blooms of algae.
5. Change your bulbs every 6 to 8 months and don’t forget your monthly or bi weekly tank maintenance.
One of the most important aspects to keeping a healthy corals is water quality. When doing water changes or topping up your tank a good quality water source is important. Adding tap water can cause minerals to build up suck as nitrates and ammonia which can lead to algae. Some corals are sensitive to excessive amounts and I always got better results from using reverse osmosis, I have eliminated so many problems to just switching from regular tap water.
